Fatal boating incident under investigation on Lake of the Woods

Authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating a fatal boating accident on Lake of the Woods that left one person dead and another injured.

The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office says a 911 call came in around 3:40 p.m. on October 18 reporting a capsized boat. Two people were rescued from the water by another passing vessel and taken to Lakewood Health Center in Baudette.

One of them later died, while the other was treated for exposure.

At the time of the incident, the water temperature was around 8 degrees celcius.

Officials say the two had been aboard an eight-metre aluminum flat-bottom jet boat, which was recovered on November 5 about two kilometres outside the Gap in approximately seven metres of water.

The recovery effort involved TowBoatUS, a team of divers, and the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office.

The case remains under investigation but is being treated as an accidental drowning pending autopsy results.
