Donald Lorne Caul
November 14, 1942 – August 13, 2025
Don passed away peacefully at Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care Home on Aug 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
Don was born on Nov 14,1942 in Fort Frances, Ontario to Roy and Winnifred Caul. He grew up in Lavallee, Ontario with his siblings Lillian, Alvin, Lynn and Dean.
He is survived by his wife Jean of 52 years, their daughter Amanda and son Ryan (Andrea) and his daughters Donna and Laura (Bob). They have six grandchildren- Jordie, Emily, Isaac (Bianca), Ethan (Baily), Mason and Natalie, his brother Dean (Gail), numerous nieces and nephews. Family was very spread out, but he always enjoyed his visits when they could get together.
Don left school at age 17 to begin his working career in the logging industry deep in the woods of Northern Ontario. He worked many jobs before landing a welding job with Banister Pipeline.
Don and Jean (Skoglund) were united in marriage on June 23, 1973, in Richfield, Minnesota. They travelled extensively during their first years of marriage with the pipeline. Don was a welder and thoroughly enjoyed his trade all his life.
With the pipeline, he was able to make two working trips to the Arctic which were a highlight of his working career.
Don had a serious pipeline accident on Aug 21, 1975, in which his back was broken in three places. Chronic pain plagued him for the rest of his life. Never one for self-pity, he forged ahead.
Don started his own mobile welding business, which he enjoyed until he retired. He also had a seasonal Dry Ice Business for fifteen years in which he delivered dry ice through Northwestern Ontario.
He loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter in his younger years, but fishing was his passion. Fishing for trout on Silver Lake was his happy place!
Don took great pride in the little house on Homestake Road that he and Jean bought fifty years ago. It was a fixer upper, and he eventually got his shop built!
In their later years you would see Don and Jean walking every morning and having coffee at A&W.
Nothing made him happier than sitting in his recliner with a cup of coffee and a good Louis Lamour Western Novel.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the doctors and nurses who provided such compassion and care to Don on 2nd East at Lake of the Woods District Hospital and Wiigwas Care Home where he spent his final days.
Cremation has taken place with private family interment to follow.
A gathering in memory and celebration of Don’s life will be held Saturday, September 13th, 2025 from 12:00-2:00 pm at the Super 8 Minis Hall.
In honour of Don, please consider a donation to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
