It’s going to cost the city over $7.8 million for the OPP to police the city in 2026.
Mayor Andrew Poirier says he received the costing from the province late last week.
He says thats about an 11 percent increase over this year.
“It increased our costs this year, year over year, with discounts, by $777,000,” says Poirier.
“Which translates into about a 2.6 percent increase in the tax levy.”
Poirier says that even with discounts, the OPP bill still amounts to a sizable increase.
“We’re lower than what our costs would have been without this, but we’re still up $777,000. We don’t know, in subsequent years, if they keep adding the caps, it’s going to keep increasing.”
Poirier adds the senior leadership team will meet next week, to talk about how that’s going to affect their operating budget.
Other external agencies are expected to increase their cost to the city as well in 2026.
