The City of Kenora is being asked to rezone 118 acres of land that will be the home of the new All Nations Hospital.
It’s currently zoned Industrial and was the former location of the Kenora Forest Products Mill.
Project manager Gord Wickham says in addition to the new hospital and a long term care facility, new housing is also being proposed.
“The housing is an exciting opportunity, because as I believe is the case here in Kenora and most of the other small towns in northern Ontario, housing is at a demand,” Wickham told city council at a zoning meeting this week.
“This will see the opportunity to develop, both through private and through staffing accommodation for the hospital, additional housing stock for the city.”
President and CEO Lake of the Woods District Hospital Cheryl O’Flaherty says the new hospital construction project will be significant for the city.
“During construction, the project will employ up to 500 workers, many housed in an on-site work camp, while supporting Kenora businesses though local spending. Once operational, the new hospital will add 400 full-time permanent positions.”
The Kenora Chiefs Advisory, which has requested the rezoning, says by zoning this an Established Area, the new hospital and long term care home would a permitted use.
