Northern Ontario municipal leaders meet in Ottawa

Municipal leaders are once again emphasizing the importance of fixing up Highways 11 and 17 in northern Ontario.

Three groups, the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities and the Rural Ontario Municipal Association are meeting this week with their federal and provincial counterparts.

They want to advance the modernization of the Trans-Canada highway through this region.

The highways have been closed down several times over the winter, and even over the last few weeks bringing attention to issues like highway safety and the importance of internal trade routes.

The groups are meeting with the Federal minister of Transport and Internal Trade along with George Pirie, the minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth.

NOMA president Rick Dumas also got a chance to meet briefly with prime minister Mark Carney.
