Why Kenora should be on every outdoor woman’s bucket list

Editors note: This is a first in a series by Amanda Lynn on great outdoor gems in northwestern Ontario

When people think of iconic Canadian outdoor destinations, Kenora, Ontario deserves to be at the top of the list. Nestled on the breathtaking shores of Lake of the Woods, this vibrant community offers more than just incredible fishing and scenic views—it offers adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories.

With over 14,500 islands and endless opportunities to explore, Lake of the Woods is a paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors. Whether you’re casting a line at sunrise, paddling through quiet bays, hiking rugged trails, or simply enjoying the spectacular sunsets over the water, Kenora has a way of slowing life down and reconnecting you with nature.

Summer is one of the best times to visit. The bustling Harbourfront comes alive with local shops, waterfront dining, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities. Every Wednesday, the popular Matiowski Farmers’ Market showcases fresh produce, handmade crafts, baked goods, and local talent, making it a must-visit stop for both residents and visitors.

The community also hosts a variety of seasonal events, including the Norseman Festival, outdoor concerts, family celebrations, and women’s adventure weekends that encourage more people to experience Northwestern Ontario’s incredible outdoors.

For women looking to build confidence in the outdoors, Kenora provides the perfect setting. It’s a place where you can learn new skills, try something you’ve never done before, and discover that the outdoors truly is for everyone. Whether you’re an experienced hunter, an avid angler, or someone who simply enjoys spending time in nature, Kenora welcomes you.

The beauty of Kenora isn’t just found in its landscapes—it’s found in its people. Friendly locals, passionate outfitters, small businesses, and a strong sense of community make every visit feel like coming home.

As someone who has spent years encouraging women and families to embrace the outdoors, I believe places like Kenora remind us why we hunt, fish, camp, and explore. It’s about more than harvesting food or catching the biggest fish. It’s about creating memories, building confidence, and passing traditions on to the next generation.

If Kenora isn’t already on your travel list, it should be. Pack your hiking boots, fishing rod, camera, and sense of adventure—you’ll leave with stories you’ll be telling for years.

Recipe of the Month: Kenora Wild Rice & Pan-Seared Walleye

Nothing says Kenora quite like fresh Lake of the Woods walleye (pickerel). Paired with Canadian wild rice and seasonal vegetables, this simple recipe brings the taste of Northwestern Ontario right to your dinner table. Walleye is one of the region’s signature catches and is celebrated throughout Kenora’s restaurants and fishing lodges.

Ingredients

For the Walleye

  • 4 fresh walleye (pickerel) fillets
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly cracked pepper
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley

For the Wild Rice

  • 1 cup Canadian wild rice
  • 2½ cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Rinse the wild rice and cook it in broth according to package directions, about 45–50 minutes.
  2. While the rice cooks, sauté the onion and mushrooms in butter until tender. Stir them into the cooked wild rice and season to taste.
  3. Pat the walleye fillets dry and season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Cook the fillets for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and the fish flakes easily with a fork.
  6. Finish with fresh lemon juice and chopped parsley.

Serve With

  • Roasted asparagus or green beans
  • Fresh lemon wedges
  • A crisp garden salad

Amanda’s Tip: Fresh walleye doesn’t need much. A light seasoning and a hot pan let the delicate, flaky flavour shine—just the way generations of anglers around Kenora have enjoyed it.
