Kenora councillor wants OPP to conduct enforcement blitz

A member of Kenora city council says he would like to see the OPP carry out a drug enforcement and crime blitz in downtown Kenora.

Bob Bernie says the Winnipeg Police successfully carried out a similar blitz in June, and he thinks the provincial police should try the same thing.

“I’m saying that we need make a concerted effort to do enforcement, and then all the other things were doing concurrently (such as the Safety and Wellbeing Committee) will fall into place,” states Bernie.

“But enforcement is so important.”

Bernie adds that he’s sent letters to the OPP detachment commander in Kenora, the regional OPP supervisor, the provincial government and even the premier.

“We can call it a blitz or a project, but we need to have a targeted response in Kenora. What prompted me to do this was the calls and the emails and the conversations I’ve had with people, have really ramped up, particularly this summer.”

Bernie is running again for a seat on Kenora city council, but says this is not some election ploy, but rather a sincere call to crack down on crime in the downtown core.
