Kenora hires influencers to promote the city

The City of Kenora is trying a different way of attracting visitors.

For the first time ever, social media influencers were used.

Economic Development Officer Megan Dokuchie explains the concept.

“We had developed a bit of a list of influencers, so people that we follow on social media, or accounts that we’re familiar with, and then we worked with our partners at Tourism Winnipeg,” explains Dokuchie.

“They provided support and advice in terms of folks they had worked with previously.”

Dokuchie adds they’ve had positive feedback.

“We worked with two influencers who have really focussed on travel and tourism destinations.  These folks build a certain number of followers on their accounts and then as a result, they wind up sharing information.”

Dokuchie admits they can’t tell if the influencers increased tourist traffic, but they do have statistics about how many people viewed their social media hits, which is significant.
