The City of Kenora has embarked on a micro-transit study.
City clerk Heather Pihulak says they want to find out if there are feasible alternatives they can use other than a conventional transit system.
“We want to make sure we find solutions that are specific to our community,” stresses Pihulak.
“It will explore things like ride-sharing, on-demand service and different mobility options.”
Pihulak adds that the study will indicate, what, if any services the city should provide.
“That study is really important to give us a guiding document as far as where we are going in the future. It will be provide council with recommended solutions and options that they can consider and make those decisions based on best practices.”
Pihulak says despite changes to bus routes and transit schedules they have seen their ridership continue to decline.
She points out that they don’t want to purchase a new transit bus, pending the release of the study, because a conventional transit system may not be one of the recommendations.
The current bus has been breaking down frequently over the past few months causing service disruptions.
