It could become more expensive to send a letter starting this spring.
Canada Post announced it is seeking approval to increase prices by seven cents per stamp.
If approved, stamps purchased in a booklet, coil, or pane will cost 99 cents, up from 92 cents.
The price of a single stamp will increase to $1.15 from the current price of $1.07.
The Crown corporation said it is the most significant jump in the past decade. Stamp prices last increased by two cents in 2020 and five cents in 2019.
The proposed rate changes would also affect other products, including U.S., international letter-post and domestic Registered Mail items.
Canada Post said it is facing “considerable financial pressure” amid cost increases, combined with fewer letters to deliver.
“As an organization funded by revenue from the sale of its products and services, not taxpayer dollars, rate changes are a reality,” it said.
Officials said the average household would pay an extra 65 cents per year while the average small business would pay $12.07 more yearly.
The new rates, if approved, would take effect on May 6.
