Melillo drafts bill to toughen up Criminal Code

The MP for the Kenora Riding has drafted his first piece of legislation.

Eric Melillo has introduced Bill-376, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code.

Melillo says his bill deals with the prohibition of possession a weapon following a conviction of any violent offense.

“That would mean assaults, trafficking in persons and a number of other serious crimes that would be included in that,” Melillo said from his office in Ottawa.

“If passed, my bill will institute a mandatory weapons prohibition for any violent offenders. What it changes, at present, certain violent offenders face a weapons prohibition, but mine would broaden it to every violent offense.”

Melillo says the bill likely won’t be voted on until the end of April.
