Canadian actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88 after a lengthy illness.
His son, Kiefer Sutherland, confirmed the news in a social media post on Thursday.
Sutherland was born in Saint John, N.B., and spent his teenage years in Bridgewater, N.S.
He landed his first part-time job at the age of 14 as a radio news reporter at CKBW.
Sutherland rose to fame after starring in films such as The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, and Kelly’s Heroes.
More recently, he played President Snow in The Hunger Games movie franchise.
In total, the actor starred in nearly 200 films and television productions during his seven-decade career.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking in Nova Scotia on Thursday, said he had the chance to meet Sutherland many years ago.
“Even as a young man who hadn’t had a full exposure to the depth of brilliance of Donald Sutherland, I was deeply, deeply starstruck,” said Trudeau.
“He was a man with a strong presence, a brilliance in his craft, and truly, truly a great Canadian artist.”
Sutherland received a Primetime Emmy Award, two Golden Globes, and a Critics Choice Award.
He was also inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was named to the Order of Canada.
Last October, Sutherland was honoured with a stamp by Canada Post.
