Air Canada flight attendants vote to strike, says union

The union representing more than 10,000 Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants says members have voted overwhelmingly in favor of strike action, Tuesday.

In a press release, CUPE says the vote was 99.7 per cent in favour of walking off the job if necessary and reflects “the deep frustration” of flight attendants.

It comes after months of negotiations with key issues like unpaid work, work rules and wages.

“The company would rather drag their feet than negotiate on the things that matter to our members,” said Wesley Lesosky, President of the Air Canada Component of CUPE. “Now, flight attendants have had a chance to weigh in and tell the company it’s time to get serious about negotiating.”

In a statement on social media, Air Canada Pilots say, “we stand by our flight attendants and support their efforts towards achieving a fair contract.”

The union says members could be in legal strike action as soon as 12:01 a.m., August 16.
