The Ontario Provincial Police delivered nearly 1,200 seatbelt charges over the Easter long weekend’s province-wide seatbelt campaign.
Drivers who were caught without a seatbelt lost demerit points and were fined, while passengers (who are also required to wear seatbelts) were also delivered fines.
Fines ranging between $240-$1,000 and two demerit points are the standard penalty for the driver.
Although seatbelts were the focus numerous other charges were laid:
- 6,400 speeding fines
- 150 stunt driving charges
- Approximately 140 impaired driving charges
- 130 distracted driving charges
“As a driver, wearing your seatbelt and ensuring all vehicle occupants are buckled up gives you, your family and other passengers your best chance of surviving a collision and reducing injuries,” said the OPP in a release.
The Easter Long Weekend Seatbelt Campaign ran from March 29 to April 1, 2024.
