Bear attack in Nipigon leaves couple with non-life-threatening injuries

A Nipigon couple is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries following a bear attack in their home.

The bear entered their house late Tuesday evening when the couple went to let their dog outside through the back door.

The bear entered the home and attacked both of the residents.

The couple was able to make it to a bedroom where they barricaded themselves and called emergency services.

When provincial police officers got on scene, they located the bear in the basement.

The family dog was keeping the bear down there.

The couple was helped out of the home and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The bear was killed to ensure public safety.

The OPP is reminding residents that while bear intrusions into homes are rare, reports of sightings and encounters are becoming more frequent at this time of year.
