Community members and police in Lac Seul teamed up Tuesday to rescue a black bear cub whose head had become stuck in a large plastic jug.
Officers located the cub near the Whitefish dump after receiving a report from a concerned resident. The bear was safely captured and taken to the police detachment, where officers were able to remove the container without causing injury.
With assistance from the Ministry of Natural Resources, the cub was later released near the area where it and its mother were last seen. Officials are hopeful the two will be reunited.
“The Lac Seul Police Service would like to thank the community member who reported the incident and helped ensure the cub received timely assistance,” police said in a news release. “This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of properly disposing of garbage and recyclable containers, as wildlife can become trapped in discarded items.”
