Canada Post strike enters second week, no end in sight

The national strike by Canada Post workers has entered its second week, with no resolution in sight as both sides continue to negotiate.
The strike, which began on November 15, has disrupted postal services across the country, including mail and parcel deliveries.

In its latest statement, the Canada Post Workers Union (CUPW) emphasized little progress in the talks over the weekend. “Talks continue today but progress has been limited this weekend,” the union said in a statement. The union has been focused on issues like workers’ pay, job security, and proposed changes to the delivery model, while Canada Post has been pushing for changes such as weekend deliveries and more flexible staffing during the week.

The union also raised concerns about Canada Post’s focus on workers they don’t represent. “The union has been focused for the last 24 hours on workers they don’t represent – like hiring away the cleaning staff from our contracted cleaning service and making them full-time Canada Post employees,” the statement noted.

The union has also pushed back on proposed changes to the pay and benefits for future hires, which it believes would negatively affect workers in the long term.

Canada Post, which has reported over $3 billion in losses since 2018, has said its proposed changes are essential for the company’s future. “This new delivery model is essential for the future of the company, and critical to our ability to afford the offers,” Canada Post stated in a previous release. Despite the ongoing strike, both sides maintain their commitment to reaching a deal at the bargaining table.
