Carney, Trump have ‘productive’ conversation: PMO

Trade challenges, opportunities, and a “new” economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States.

Those were some of the topics discussed on Thursday between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump.

A readout from the Prime Minister’s Office described it as a “productive and wide-ranging” conversation.

“The leaders also discussed how to build on the President’s leadership to support long-term peace and security for Ukraine and Europe,” said the readout.

Both leaders agreed to speak again “shortly” but no specific timeframe was given.t

Trump increased tariffs on Canada to 35 per cent earlier in August, with the White House saying Canada has failed to address fentanyl and other illicit drugs crossing the border.

Officials said the increased tariff only applies to goods that do not comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement.
