City council approves a new AI policy

The City of Kenora has developed an Artificial Intellegence policy.

Mark Doornbos is the Manager of Information Technology and says Kenora is one of the few municipalities in Ontario to have such a policy.

“AI governance at the municipal level in Ontario is still in the early stages of adoption,” Doornbos told city council recently.

“Approximately 90 municipalities, which is around 11 percent, have formal adopted an AI governance or use policy, while and additional 14 percent are actively developing one.”

Doornbos says that means only about 25 percent of municipalities in Ontario have one or are working on an AI policy.

“One quarter of municipalities are either implementing or working toward AI governance frameworks, with the majority, which is roughly over 70 percent not yet having a policy in place. So, for me, it’s rewarding to see that the City of Kenora is taking a leadership role in this space.”

In his report to city council Doornbos says as governments accelerate the use of AI technologies, the need for strong governance has never been more critical.
