City of Kenora and CUPE 191 in mediation talks today

The strike deadline for CUPE workers with the City of Kenora is getting closer.

CUPE local 191 will be in a legal strike position as of Saturday.

Roberta Marsh is the city’s Director of Human Resources and says this is the last offer they made to the union.

“It is about an 11 percent increase over the next 4 years, with three percent in 2024, three percent in 2025, 2.5 in 2026 and 2.5 (percent) in 2027.”

Marsh adds the deal they are offering is similar to one that has already been approved by another bargaining group.

“The city has put forward its last proposal, it’s not its final proposal, it’s just the proposal we’re working from. We have offered CUPE 191 similar general wage increases that was offered to IBEW and was successfully ratified by IBEW.”

Mediated talks are to resume today, and Marsh is confident that a deal can be reached.

Marsh told city council this week at their Committee of the Whole meeting, contingency plans have been drafted should there be a strike.
