Scotties tournament expected to boost Thunder Bay economy

The 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is anticipated to deliver an economic boost to Thunder Bay, generating an estimated $4.2 million for the local economy.

Eighteen teams across Canada will compete for the national women’s curling championship at Fort William Gardens starting this Friday.

Paul Pepe, Manager of Tourism at the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), emphasized the event’s positive impact on the community, particularly the local curling scene.

“One thing about Thunder Bay is it really does roll out the red carpet for players, fans and the sponsors, and that’s a great positive reputation we have,” Pepe said.

Pepe highlighted how the event will support local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and other establishments.

“Events like the Scotties are crucial for our community, especially in the winter months,” he said

The influx of visitors, including players, sponsors, officials, and fans, is expected to contribute to the local economy through spending on accommodation, dining, and other services.

Pepe adds that the widespread media coverage will also boost Thunder Bay’s reputation as a destination.

The final match will happen on Sunday and the winning team will represent Canada at the 2025 World Women’s Curling Championship in Uijeongbu, South Korea, from March 15-23.
