Drop in border crossings amid Canada-U.S. trade war

The number of people crossing into Canada from the United States dropped dramatically in February.

The new data from Statistics Canada comes amid ongoing trade and political tensions with the U.S.

Canadian-resident return trips by vehicle dropped 23 per cent year over year to 1.2 million.

It marks just the second year-over-year decline observed since March 2021, according to StatCan.

Return trips by air were also down just over two per cent year over year to 1.8 million.

Meanwhile, the number of U.S.-resident trips to Canada by vehicle dropped nearly eight per cent to 676,800.

That also marked the second year-over-year decline observed since March 2021.
