Evacuation of Pikangikum to begin Saturday

Another first nation in northwestern Ontario is being evacuated because of a forest fire.

Just as residents of Deer Lake are returning home after a month-long evacuation, the Pikangikum First Nation is under an evacuation notice.

Starting Saturday about 2,000 residents will be evacuated to Toronto and Mississauga.

That’s because Red Lake Fire #62 is burning just south of the community.

It’s been mapped at just over 26,400 hectares.
