SUMMARY:Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child
DESCRIPTION:Event Details: Empty shoeboxes are filled with gifts for underprivileged children\, and then are shipped across the world\, including the west coast of Africa\, Ukraine\, South America\, and the Philippines. The shoe boxes can be filled with toys\, clothes\, accessories\, school supplies\, hygiene items and more (no soap or food or items that could melt\, run or freeze). \n  \nWhere to pick up: Empty boxes and brochures can be picked up at the Kenora Public Library or Home Hardware store starting September 15th and dropped off before the 3rd week of November. \n  \nMore information: \nIt’s time again for Samaritan’s Purse outreach for Operation Christmas Child. This promotion and collection carries through to the 3rd week of November. The boxes and brochures with instructions can be picked up at Home Hardware\, at the Kenora Public Library (bottom level)\, and filled boxes returned there for someone to pick up. If a greater number of boxes need to be picked up\, phone Doris 807-467-3123 for arrangement for pick up. \nThese boxes are shipped around the world by Samaritan’s Purse where there are natural upheavals\, wars\, disasters\, or for third world countries where there is a need. \nItems to be included in these shoeboxes are: \n\nSchool supplies—books\, pencils\, notebooks\, etc.\nToys—age & doll\, balls\, jump ropes\, stuffed animals\, etc.\nOther fun toys\, hygiene items (toothbrushes\, combs\, soap that will not melt\, facecloths).\nClothing—age appropriate—socks\, shirts\, etc.\nNo food (candy\, gum\, medications or vitamins\, war toys\, breakable items).\n\nInstructions are included on the brochures which are available with the empty box. Also labels to put on the boxes to designate whether for boy or girl\, and the age brackets. \nThe main collection centre is Calvary Church on Valley Drive\, to be shipped out mid-November.

Here are the fantastic exhibition that you can check out on your visit\, free of charge:\n\n@ THE LAKE OF THE WOODS MUSEUM & DOUGLAS FAMILY ART CENTRE\nPeople of the Watershed: Photographs by John Macfie features a selection of artifacts and 120 colour photographs taken from the 1940s through the 1960s\, featuring Indigenous people from communities in Treaties 3\, 5\, and 9 during a period of rapid transition. This exhibition is spread across both facilities.\n\n@ THE DOUGLAS FAMILY ART CENTRE:\nItinerant Sketches: C. Nickerson is an exhibition of oil landscape paintings of Kenora\, from a visit to our region in fall of 2024. The show revolves around the observations she made\, a snapshot from her point of view. Walking\, driving\, canoeing and boating Nickerson turned her eyes to the landscape\, and observed the layered human footprint through architecture\, infrastructure\, landmarks\, and lifestyles.\n\n*Admission is being offered for FREE thanks to Triple PLAY. Triple PLAY is a non-profit that supports low-income families in Kenora in accessing Positive Leisure Activities for Youth (PLAY). Funds donated to Triple PLAY support registration fees\, equipment\, and transportation costs to ensure all children have an equal opportunity to participate in leisure activities. And it’s not just sports! Lessons in music\, dance\, visual arts\, and more are all covered under Triple PLAY’s umbrella. SUMMARY:Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:At the Gail Konantz Studio at the Douglas Family Art Centre! On select dates\, the Studio will be open to the public for use between 10:00am to 4:30pm. \nIf you do not have adequate space at home to pursue your art\, or if you enjoy a more communal work environment\, this opportunity is for you. This shared work space is equipped with work tables\, easels\, aprons\, paint palettes\, paint brushes\, containers\, rags\, clay wedging boards\, a slab roller\, a sink\, and more!  All non-consumable materials and equipment are available for use.  Bring your art or craft project to the Studio to work on independently. This is not an instructed session\, but an opportunity to work in the space. \nAs it is a community space\, no aerosols\, solvents\, or flammable processes will be allowed. Storage of artwork and materials is not provided. Children under 14 must be under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. \nCost is $10.00 (HST included) per person or FREE for MUSE members.  Fee includes use of the following consumable materials: pencils\, pencil crayons\, washable markers\, and scrap paper. \nNo other consumable materials are included\, but they may be purchased for an additional fee.*   If you know what materials you may need ahead of time\, you can contact Shelby for an estimate: 807-467-2201 or ssmith@themusekenora.ca.
