Northwestern Ontario braces for bitter chill

Bundle up northwestern Ontario. A bitterly cold Thursday is on the horizon.

Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for several regions, including Fort Frances, Kenora, Dryden, Atikokan, Sioux, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Narrows, Emo, and Rainy River.

The wind chill will be near minus 40 and the extreme cold conditions will become less severe later Thursday morning, according to Environment Canada.

Extreme cold conditions pose serious risks to everyone, particularly vulnerable groups such as young children, older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers or exercisers, and those without adequate shelter.

Environment Canada has warned that frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. They stress the importance of covering up and minimizing time spent outdoors.

Symptoms of cold-related health issues include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness, and changes in skin colour in fingers and toes.
