Federal NDP will not have official party status

The federal NDP will not have official party status in the House of Commons.

Parliament’s Rules of Procedure say a party must have 12 seats to be recognized.

The NDP won just seven in last month’s election, down from the 25 they held before.

Without party status, the NDP will lose out on funding for research and staff.

The party will also not be guaranteed a question in the daily question period.

Jagmeet Singh resigned as party leader after losing his own seat. Don Davies is serving as interim leader.
