Feds say new school lunch program will save families $800 a year

A National School Food Program will make life better for Canadian families, according to the federal government.

They say it will save families an average of $800 a year in groceries.

Jenna Sudds, the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Nova Scotia to highlight the new policy.

“That policy is our vision as a government that all children and youth across this country have access to nutritious food at school,” said Sudds.

They say 400,000 more kids will have access each year, beyond those served by existing school food programs.

Sudds says they expect provinces and territories to keep their current funding.

“And to maintain the existing programs as we make additional investments to expand the reach to more communities and more children.”

The PM says these are difficult times with prices being way too high.

“We’re bringing forward real solutions. Our budget is focused on delivering fairness for every generation. This policy lays the groundwork for strong collaboration with provinces and territories, including right here in Nova Scotia, where they’re implementing their own program.”
