Forest fire activity increases in northwest region

It was a busy Friday for Ministry of Natural Resources wildland fire crew.

Eight new forest fires were reported in several parts of northwestern Ontario.

Most were small in size and have since been declared out or identified as under control.

A total of 8 new wildland fires were discovered in the Northwest Region by the early evening of June 6.

A fire near Whitemud Lake, about 50 east of Ear Falls is the largest among the new blazes.

It has scorched 16 hectares with waterbombers and ground crews working to bring it under control.

Two other fires near Keewaywin First Nation are being observed.

The fires are located near McCoy Lake.

One is sized at 28 hectares, while the other is listed at 50 hectares.

Other smaller fires were reported at Mishkeegogamang First Nation, near South Narrow Lake and Hwy. 71, Schurg Lake, west of Hwy. 502, Obabikong First Nation, near the Pipestone River Provincial Park and near Mullen Lake and Hwy. 642

There are 22 fires still active.

Six remain listed as not under control. Three are being held. Eight are under control and five fires are being observed.

The wildland fire hazard is high to extreme across the northwest Region.

A ban on open fires impacting much of the region remains in effect.
