Forest fire fighters busy over long weekend

The forest fire hazard may be low to moderate across northwestern Ontario, but that didn’t stop wild fires from affecting traffic on Highway 17.

The Trans-Canada was closed a couple of time on Sunday due to forest fires.

The biggest one was Dryden fire #5, which was located about 20 kilometers west of Ignace near Raleigh Falls.

The blaze closed the highway for nearly four hours as Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry crews battled it.

Water bombers and initial air attack aircraft were used to help subdue the fire.

It’s now been mapped at 9.5 hectares and is being held.

That was just one of six new forest fires reported over the long weekend.
