Lake Afternoon Drive: Friday vibes, speed cameras, and weekend plans

Happy Friday, Kenora! If you’re listening to today’s show on 89.5 The Lake, you know we’ve got a lot to cover! From local sports and community events to hot-button issues like speed cameras and Canada Post.

Local Sports Heating Up

It’s a big weekend for Northwestern Ontario sports fans. The Dryden GM Ice Dogs and Sioux Lookout Bombers are both hosting home openers. The Ice Dogs face off against the Thunder Bay North Stars tonight and tomorrow at the Dog Pound, while the Bombers take on the Ironwood Lumberjacks and Red Lake Miners over the weekend.

High school football is also in full swing. The Dryden Eagles and Beaver Brae Broncos are playing at home, and merch will be available at the Broncos game. Cash or e-transfer accepted. If you know someone playing, have them call in! I’m always down to “chew the fat,” as my grandfather used to say.

Weekend Plans: From Oktoberfest to Healing Journeys

Jen texted in her weekend plans: a hike followed by Oktoberfest at Brewers Village. Sounds like a solid combo. There’s also the Kaatagoging Local Book Launch happening Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jarnel Contracting Pavilion. Survivors of the residential school system will be sharing their healing journeys and newly released book set.

Earlier today, I stopped by the “No One Gets Left Behind” event. Very informative and worth checking out.

Speed Cameras: Safety or Cash Grab?

Premier Doug Ford is pulling the plug on speed cameras across Ontario, calling them a “cash grab.” But is saving a few bucks worth risking lives?

Most speed cameras are concentrated in Southern Ontario, especially the GTA and Ottawa. Interestingly, the map I found doesn’t show any in Northwestern Ontario. Nor does it show any in the Hamilton-Niagara region. Although I know for a fact there are some there.

Canada Post Strike: What’s at Stake?

Canada Post workers are striking again and this time over plans to end door-to-door delivery. The government says switching to community mailboxes could save $400 million a year, but it also risks rural closures, price hikes, and thousands of job losses.

Canada Post has lost over $5 billion since 2018 and is bleeding $10 million a day.

Music Moments: Bieber, NSYNC, and The Strumbellas

Justin Bieber’s latest albums are legit R&B records, and he’s headlining Coachella in 2026. Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s okay to feel a little patriotic. I’ve got a write-up on Coachella if you want to dive deeper.

As well, I nominate Lance Bass as the spiritual successor to Mr. Rogers. I have my reasons.

And if you’re feeling down, The Strumbellas are your go-to band. They’re playing Winnipeg’s Burton Cummings Theater on November 26. Check out the details here.

Final Notes

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is Tuesday. Remember to wear your orange shirt! And be sure to tune into 89.5 the Lake for an important broadcast.

The Blue Jays are also playing the Rays tonight, and their playoff seeding is on the line. Will you be watching? I’ve got a BBQ to go to, so I’ll just keep my eye on the score. Thank you, smartphone.

Got an opinion? Share it with me on the TBay Tel Talk & Text Line. Call or text anytime between 2 and 6pm, Monday to Friday!
