Update: Heavy rain expected in northwestern Ontario

Heavy rain is expected in northwestern Ontario over the weekend.

Environment Canada has issued rain warnings for a few municipalities in the region, including:

  • Kenora
  • Dryden
  • Red Lake
  • Ear Falls
  • Sioux Lookout
  • Nestor Falls
  • Vermillion Bay
  • Savant Lake

The forcaster says a total of 50 to 75 millimetres of rain is expected Saturday evening through Sunday.

Areas that see multiple thunderstorms could also receive more than 75 millimetres of rain.

“Showers, at times heavy, and thunderstorms are expected to move through northwestern Ontario ahead of a low-pressure system,” said Environment Canada in the warning.

“The significant rainfall will move from southwest to northeast, with multiple rounds of heavy showers possible for some areas, before tapering off late Sunday.”

Residents should be cautious of possible washouts near waterbodies and culverts.

Water pooling on roads and flooding are also possibilities.

Environment Canada has now also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several locations, including:

  • Sioux Lookout
  • Savant Lake
  • Kenora
  • Nestor Falls
  • Dryden
  • Ignace
  • Fort Frances

Thunderstorms may occur between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Residents in these locations should watch out for large hail up to 5 centimetres and strong winds up to 90 km/h.

Environment Canada encourages Canadians to go indoors when they hear thunder and see lightning.
