Holy Mackinaw! That was an Emotional One

If you were watching last night, you probably felt and heard it right away. It wasn’t just the Leafs wrapping up their home schedule, it was Joe Bowen calling his final home game after 44 years.

The game itself was chaos in the most Leafs way possible, a 6–5 loss to Dallas, but nobody’s going to remember that.  They’re going to remember the moment in the third when the tribute rolled and the crowd refused to sit down. The standing ovation went on for over two minutes, and you could see Bowen up there in the booth trying to keep it together with his family behind him.

And then after the horn, this part got me. The Leafs gathered at center and Tavares, Nylander and the guys lifted their sticks toward the broadcast booth, a proper salute to the voice that’s been in everyone’s ear since 1982.  It’s one of those small hockey gestures that says and means everything.

Bowen’s speech wasn’t some long, overproduced thing, it was just him being him. He talked about how loyal Leafs fans are and how they’ll get their moment someday.  He compared the Leafs’ wait to the Red Sox and Cubs, and he painted this picture of how big the eventual celebration is going to be for people who’ve been hanging on forever. The line that stuck was basically the idea that when it finally happens, people will be sharing it with family members who never got to see it, and he ended it with, “I just hope I’m around to see it.”

Also, we have to say it out loud at least once, “Holy mackinaw!” That’s the whole thing. It’s the call that’s basically become part of Toronto vocabulary, and it’s still the first thing people mention when they talk about him.

And fans have their own favourite “Bonsie moments,” too. His little signature stuff, like when he calls John Tavares “Johnny Toronto!”. Another is the bigger “where were you” calls, like the 2023 playoff overtime, the kind of thing that turns the broadcaster into a memorable moment.

There’s also real talk side to this retirement. Bowen’s been pretty open that the job changed, especially with road games being called remotely off monitors, and he basically said straight up that it wasn’t what he signed up for.  It’s not hard to understand. If you’ve ever been in an arena, you know how much of the story is the atmosphere, the bench reactions, the little things you feel more than see.

The good news is, it’s not quite over yet. Bowens still got one more Leafs broadcast, Wednesday in Ottawa, and then that’s it.  After that, the booth at Scotiabank Arena is literally going to be renamed the “Joe Bowen broadcast booth,” which feels right, you don’t replace a voice like that, you just can’t.

So yeah. Leafs fans can argue about everything forever, but not this, Bowen’s been a constant. Car rides. Late-night games. Hockey practice drives. Good years, rough years, all of it. And last night was the city saying thanks in the loudest way it knows how.

“Holy Mackinaw!”
