IISD-ELA receives NOHFC funding for new building

The Experimental Lakes Area between Kenora and Vermilion Bay is growing.

The ELA is getting two million dollars from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

It to help build a 10 thousand square foot Centre for Climate and Lake Learning.

The building will include classroom labs, a commercial kitchen, a dining hall, washrooms, office space and dormitory accommodations for researchers and visitors.

The ELA says the new center will be able to accommodate the growing number of scientist and researchers who come out to the site each year.

It will also create year-round educational and outreach programs, including for elementary and secondary school students from across northwestern Ontario.

Design work has already started, and the building is expected to be completed in April of 2027.
