Inquest to look into 2020 death at Thunder Bay jail

A coroner’s inquest will be held into the 2020 death of a man from Kingfisher Lake First Nation.

Kevin Mamakwa died while held in custody at the Thunder Bay jail.

The 27-year-old was a nephew of Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa.

The inquest is intended to look into the circumstances surrounding the death and make recommendations for the provincial government and other agencies to consider.

At the time, the NDP MPP indicated that his nephew had been found unresponsive in his jail cell.

The cause of death was not revealed.

Sol Mamakwa also calls on the province to take action to address the number of deaths involving Indigenous people that previously occurred at the jail.

The date and location of the inquest have not yet been determined.
