The City of Kenora Fire and Emergency Services is marking Fire Prevention Week with an open house.
On Tuesday, Station 1 (located at 100 Fourteenth Street North) will be opening its doors to the public from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Residents will be able to partake in a community barbecue, tour the fire station, meet members of the service, and learn more about fire prevention.
This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” which emphasises safe charging lithium-ion batteries as they become more commonplace.
The fire department has released a series of tips for safely charging reusable batteries:
- Use the cord and charger supplied with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table or desk.
- Never charge devices on beds, couches, or under pillows.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
- Stop using a battery or device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smokes, smells strange, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
- Charge larger items, such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools, outside when possible and away from exits.
School, workplaces, and other community groups and organizations can contact Kenora Fire and Emergency Services at 807-467-2090 to set up an information session.
