Lake Afternoon Drive: Samaritan’s Purse

I have a very strict rule. No Christmas anything until after Remembrance Day.

Samaritan’s Purse is the one exception.

It starts with an empty shoebox.

Not the most glamorous of containers, but in the hands of a child in Kenora—and with a little help from a parent—it becomes something magical.

A shoebox filled with love, hope, and a reminder that even small gestures can ripple across the globe.

From now until the third week of November, families in Kenora have the chance to take part in Operation Christmas Child, a global outreach initiative by Samaritan’s Purse.

The idea is simple: fill a shoebox with gifts for children who may have never received one before. These boxes are shipped to places like the west coast of Africa, Ukraine, South America, and the Philippines.

Regions where war, poverty, or disaster have made childhood a little less joyful.

But here’s the twist: this isn’t just about giving. It’s also about teaching.

Imagine sitting down with your child, opening up that empty box, and asking, “What would you want if you had nothing?”

Suddenly, that jump rope isn’t just a toy, it’s a lifeline to play. That toothbrush isn’t just hygiene, it’s dignity. And that notebook? A chance to learn.

Samaritan’s Purse – Where to Start

Boxes and brochures are available at Kenora Public Library (bottom level) and Home Hardware.

Inside the brochure, you’ll find instructions and labels to mark whether your box is for a boy or girl, and which age group it’s intended for. Once filled, boxes can be dropped off at the same locations or at Calvary Church on Valley Drive, the main collection centre.

If you’re planning to fill several boxes (maybe as a classroom or community group), Doris is your go-to contact at 807-467-3123 to arrange a bulk pickup.

Samaritan’s Purse – What to Pack

Here’s where the fun begins. Kids can help choose items like:

  • School supplies: pencils, notebooks, erasers
  • Toys: stuffed animals, balls, jump ropes
  • Hygiene items: toothbrushes, combs, facecloths (no soap or liquids)
  • Clothing: socks, t-shirts, hats

Just remember: no food, candy, war toys, or breakables. Think sturdy, safe, and joyful.

Samaritan’s Purse – Why It Matters

It’s easy to forget how lucky we are.

In Kenora, even on the coldest days, most kids have warm socks, a hot meal, and a safe place to sleep.

But in many parts of the world, these basics are luxuries. Samaritan’s Purse is a chance to show our kids that giving isn’t just about charity. It’s about empathy.

And for the children receiving these boxes? It’s not just about the items inside. It’s about knowing someone, somewhere, cares. That they matter. That they’re not forgotten.

A Family Tradition in the Making

For many families, this becomes an annual tradition. Kids remember what they packed last year. They ask questions about where the boxes go. They start to understand the world beyond their backyard.

So, grab a box. Sit down with your kids. Talk about gratitude. Talk about giving. And fill that shoebox with love.

Because sometimes, the smallest box carries the biggest message.
