Liberal MP elected Speaker of the House of Commons

The new Speaker of the House of Commons has been elected.

Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia represents the Québec riding of Lac-Saint-Louis.

Six Liberal MPs had put their name forward to serve in the non-partisan role.

Also on the secret ranked ballot was Greg Fergus, the most recent speaker, and Justice Minister Sean Fraser.

A Liberal in the speaker’s chair means one less vote for the party.
