MAT expected to rise by 1 percent

fkFiThe City of Kenora is considering increasing it’s Municipal Accommodation Tax by one percent.

It currently stands at 4 percent.

Director of Economic Development and Tourism Stace Gander says the increase is expected to generate anywhere from $125,000 thousand to $150,000 extra.

MAT currently generates about $600,000 a year.

The MAT is charged to local hotels, motels, or any other overnight accommodation.

Part of the money goes to the Kenora Hospitality Alliance and the majority goes toward special events and other tourism initiatives in the City of Kenora.

In the past the MAT has supported:

– Annual marketing program
– Tourism destination brand development
– Implementation of McLeod Park phase I capital improvements
– Harbourtown Centre holiday lighting program
– Harbourtown Centre streetscaping
– The self-cleaning washroom
– Coney Island Shuttle
