More modular builds of Ontario correctional facilities planned

The designs used to expand correctional facilities in northwestern Ontario are being used on projects elsewhere.

The provincial government is planning expansions of facilities in Thorold, Sudbury and Milton.

Solicitor General Michael Kerzner says they will be modular builds, similar to those in Kenora and Thunder Bay.

“This is a great design. We have a great partner with Bird (Construction), and what we want to do is, as an example, where we have a permanent building, figure out how we can further expand it that doesn’t take a generation to do,” says Kerzner.

An expansion of the Kenora jail was completed in 2022.

The work at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre is scheduled to be finished next year.

“It’s well on schedule to be completed next year. And I saw the progress for myself just last week when I was in Thunder Bay. We’re building capacity, we’re modernizing our facilities, we’re ensuring that dangerous offenders are held accountable,” says Kerzner.
