Province to review police costing formula

The province is preparing to review policing costs in Ontario.

Continued lobbying by communities policed by the Ontario Provincial Police has led to the Solicitor General Office committing to a review of the formula used to determine municipal costs.

Policing costs for some northwestern Ontario communities have increased by as much as 50% in the last ten years.

While the province says the average household cost is about $400.00, it is almost double that in places like Kenora, Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, and Red Lake.

The issue came to a head last fall when area towns were hit with increases as much as 25%, forcing the government to provide a one-time reduction.

The Ministry recently informed mayors and Chief Administrative Officers in a letter of its planned review.

It is expected to be complete before bills for 2026 are issued.
