No survivors expected after plane, helicopter collide near U.S. capitol

More than two dozen bodies have been recovered and officials say no survivors are expected after a midair collision just outside of the U.S. capitol.

An American Airlines plane with 64 people collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter with three people on board.

It happened Wednesday evening near the Ronald Reagan National Airport just outside of Washington, D.C.

Both aircraft fell into the Potomac River, where hundreds of rescuers continue to scour the water.

During a Thursday morning news conference, officials confirmed they had recovered 27 bodies from the airplane and one from the helicopter.

Officials do not believe there were any survivors and have transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery operation.

Media reports say several U.S. figure skaters and coaches were on the plane. Their flight had originated in Wichita, Kansas, where the skaters had a training camp.
