The official countdown to this year’s municipal and school board elections is underway.
May 1st is the day when candidates can officially file their nomination papers with municipal clerks’ offices.
They must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years or older, and live, own, or rent property in the municipality for which they are seeking office.
In communities with more than 4,000 voters, candidates also need at least 25 signatures endorsing them.
Candidates running to be the head of council must pay a fee of $200 at the time of filing, $100 for all other positions.
The fee is refunded if financial statements are filed by the deadline.
The nomination period goes until August 21st.
The clerk has until 4 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, to certify or reject the nomination.
Elections will be held on October 26th.
Eligible residents are encouraged to ensure they are on the voters’ lists.
