Northwestern Ontario agricultural groups to offer comment on proposed bill

A legislative committee is opening public hearings on Wednesday in Timmins on a proposed farm bill.

Bill 109 proposes several changes, the province says will strengthen Ontario’s food production sector and protect farmers and the quality of the food system.

It includes restrictions on foreign access to Ontario farmland, an expansion of agricultural production in northern Ontario and modernization of veterinary medicine practices.

The Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association and the Beef Farmers of Thunder Bay are among those scheduled to make presentations.

The committee was originally scheduled to begin the hearings in Rainy River on Monday, but the session was cancelled.

No explanation was given.
