Northwestern Ontario officers to be remembered at ceremony

Two police officers from northwestern Ontario will be honoured during the annual Ceremony of Remembrance in Toronto on Sunday.

The event pays tribute to officers who died in the line of duty.

This year, a special tribute will be paid to Constable Wilford Fairles and Constable Craig Town.

Fairles died in December 1910 following an attack earlier that October while working for the former Rainy River Police.

Fairless was shot, severely beaten and left in a ditch where he was discovered the next morning and taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Town was an officer with Thunder Bay Police Service when he suffered a gunshot wound in 1991 that left him a paraplegic.

He continued to serve until his retirement after 30 years in 2023.

Town passed away that August from complications due to his injuries.

Sunday’s ceremony is expected to attract thousands of uniformed officers from police services across Ontario, Canada, the United States and Europe.
