The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has selected the Ignace and the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation as the host communities for their deep underground nuclear waste facility.
Both Ignace and Wabigoon voted earlier this year to be a willing host for the nuclear waste site.
This is a decision that’s been 14 years in the making and the choice was narrowed by the the Ignace area and the Bruce Peninsula in southern Ontario.
The NWMO says there is consensus that a deep underground nuclear waste repository is the safest way of disposing spent nuclear fuel.
The project will need more than a decade for regulatory approvals.
The NWMO says this is a project that has a 175-year timeline and has a price tag of more than $26 billion.
