An outbreak in Ontario has prompted a recall of Silk and Great Value brand plant-based beverages.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the beverages may be contaminated with listeria.
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health says there have been nine cases linked to the product.
Five people have been hospitalized.
It now issued an advisory, warning against consuming the product.
“Ontarians are reminded to check their fridges for the recalled products, and if any are found, they should be immediately discarded or returned to the location where they were purchased,” a statement from Dr. Kieran Moore reads.
It adds that listeria does not change the smell, taste or appearance of food.
Dr. Moore notes that the Ministry of Health is working with local public health agencies, Public Health Ontario, the CFIA, Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada regarding the recall.
A similar advisory has been issued for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
A list of affected products can be found on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s website.
The products have since been removed from store shelves.
