OPP launch seasonal foot patrol in downtown Kenora

The Kenora OPP are embarking on a seasonal patrol initiative.

Between the hours of 4:30 and 5:30 in the afternoon, officers will be conducting foot patrols in the downtown area.

Councillor Bob Bernie says this is something he suggested to make shoppers and staff walking to their cars after work feel safer.

“The activate our downtown space, to attract people to come downtown, shop locally, and support our local merchants,” explains Bernie on the initiative.

“But also, to make it safe for them. With the time change, people just don’t feel safe.”

Bernie like the idea of the foot patrol because it’s in keeping with their Community Safety and Wellbeing plan.

“A police presence…a foot patrol…a cruiser patrol in the downtown core just makes sense. It brings that sense of safety. There’s no substitute for a police presence as a deterrent and to make people feel safe.”

The downtown foot patrols will continue for the month of December.
