The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign is underway in northwestern Ontario.
President of Branch 29 in Fort Frances, Simone Laser, says poppies will be available from now until Remembrance Day.
“It’s about 11 days long this time. We collect money to support veterans, their families and the community as a whole,” says Laser.
Wearing a poppy also shows support for those who sacrificed their lives to keep Canada safe in past wars.
Donation boxes to acquire a poppy are at various businesses.
Laser says the money collected is used locally.
“We use it to support veterans directly. If they need anything in the community, they’re welcome to contact us, but also their families as well,” says Laser.
“We support a lot of youth activities. For instance, kids travelling to southern Ontario or whatever for sporting events, they can request help with their travel.”
The Legions have also supported other fundraising campaigns, such as those for medical equipment.
