Quilts, theatre & dance

If you love quilting, classical comedy or ballet, there are several events to check out in Kenora over the coming days! With the weather warming up, the local event calendar is beginning to fill up.

The Lake of the Woods Quilters’ Guild Auction

The Lake of the Woods Quilters’ Guild is hosting an auction tonight, offering quilt lovers a chance to bid on beautiful homemade pieces. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the auction begins at 7 p.m at The Old Armouries at 316 1st St. S. You can expect many different quilts of various sizes including bed quilts, table runners, table toppers and more.

A silver collection will be taken at the door, and the silent auction will offer 25 tickets for $5. Proceeds will go towards education to help bring in more instructors.

The guild has more exciting events on the horizon! To celebrate their 40th anniversary, they are hosting a quilt show in May featuring some of the very first quilts made by the guild. The group is also planning a trip to Winnipeg for Quilts Canada 2026 this June. If you’d like to be a part of it, you can reach out to the members on Facebook or via email at lowqguild@gmail.com.

TryLight Theatre’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”

TryLight Theatre is staging their new spring production, The Importance of Being Earnest. This satirical play follows playful bachelors who create fake personas to dodge Victorian social expectations, shining a light on the absurdity of love, class and societal hypocrisy. As described by the artistic director Gord Day-Janz, the show is very funny and witty. So if you’re looking for a light-hearted, family friendly event, this is the one!

They have a show tonight through Friday (April 23-24), and the show begins at 7:30 CDT. You can buy your tickets online at trylight.ca or in person at the box office (510 Second St. S.) today from11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. If you prefer to watch from home, a livestream option is available for April 23.

RWB’s “On the Edge Tour”

DanceWorks Kenora is bringing a world-class performance to the city: The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s On the Edge Tour. You can expect a blend of story ballet excerpts and contemporary choreography. I can guarantee it will bring a smile to your face, maybe even a few tears.

The show takes place at the Seven Generations Event Centre on Friday, April 24, with show times at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at danceworkskenora.com.

A little bit about DanceWorks Kenora: They have been providing dance education for Kenora’s talented dancers since it’s official opening in 2014. It has created a welcoming environment for anyone interested in this historic art form.
