Rec. Center lobby project behind schedule

The lobby reconfiguration project at the Moncrief Construction Sports Center will take longer than expected.

The project was started this summer, but Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says they ran into some hiccups along the way.

“We discovered some structural columns inside the walls during demolition,” Breen reported to council recently.

“Reviewing the original drawings for the building, (we) weren’t really able to determine why those are there, exactly what they are supporting. And so, the decision has been made to leave them in place and work around them.”

As a result, Breen says the project is behind schedule.

“We are seeing about an 11-week delay to the schedule in order to work around those columns. And so that means that the completion date is going to shift into February, I’d say.”

The city says the goal is to modernize the lobby, relocate the reception desk, enhance security, and improve the user experience.
